R.S. Beal 'Ehrerbietung zu Hausner' Oil (Detail) 2005
The great German/Austrian Surrealist 'Rudolf Hausner (b. Vienna, 1914, d. Modling, 1994)'*, well known for his meticulous use of egg tempera-oil and his stone lithographs of 'Adam' and 'The Fools Cap', utilized an intense secondary light that was often stronger than the direct or primary light source and permeated the whole canvas with this secondary light. His articulate use of, often, the most 'acidified' color was generally balanced and harmonized under this intense secondary light.
Here Adam, (Hausner's face), is replaced by the artists own face and 'Walking Man in Jeans' motif, while still using Hausners 'formal structure - a complex 'industrial man', adam II, is in fact 'everyman'. I stopped in the middle of working on an original work, 'Paradise Lost', in order to complete the 'homage to Hausner', who died in 1995. The enlarged detail shows the artists own technique in oil, where the green shirt becomes instead an 'every color' iridescent material, still permeated by Hausners intense Red secondary light, which filters thru the entire canvas. Hausner, himself (not shown) is at the bottom right of the canvas, still juggling his magic spheres . . .

Robert S. Beal 'Rudolf Revisited 2009' (The Traumatized Child-Adult)
- To turn 'beauty' into ugliness thru deceit and visa-versa - the American way - Hausners Adam becomes HUGO. Hugo made his first appearance in my work around 1988, as a bedeviled child-adult Alfred E. Neuman type, surrounded by the implements of his craft floating about (x-acto knives, pencils, erasers, paint tubes, etc.). Most of that work was lost, stolen or destroyed and essentially were self-portrait genres, (Hugo as Kanishka-early Indian Kushan ruler, Hugo as Nagarjuna - Enlightened India philospher, Hugo pretending to be Buddha, etc..) He appears to be indifferent, non-reactive and detached from all that is going on around him, albeit apparently, as in this work, he is about to be hung.

As a Surrealist Painter I am completely a-political, which does not neccessitate nor prevent the overtly sub-conscious 'social' sub-stratum material from entering into any specific work. Beta, a colorful small asian-oriental shallow water fish, often imported to the USA for aquarium use, when put in a confined space with another male, will literally, like man, fight until both are either maimed or dead. They are extremely territorial and will entirely destroy each other for a very small section of swimming space. I.e., 'They Bite OFF More than they can CHEW'.

'Portrait Oil sketchs or studies are either completed works or studies to be later used or incorporated into larger Surrealist paintings.'
René Creval, in L'Esprit contre la raison (1928):
The poet does not put the wild animals to sleep in order to play the tamer, but, the cages wide open, the keys thrown to the winds, he journeys forth, a traveller who thinks not of himself but of the voyage, of dream beaches, forests of hands, soul-endowed animals, all undeniable surreality. - Rene Creval
'to view the graphic study for 'Portrait of Dean Christianson' visit: SURREALISM Oneirical and Classical ('Painting Process Gallery' - bottom page-offsite)' " . . .To be any good, a Surrealist must not only be a master Portraitist, an academician, a landscape painter, an imagist, an anatomist (anatomy), a Still Life painter, a visionary, etc. he must yet still have an ample supply of Imagination left-over to be able to paint the enigmatic 'Poetic Image' in a state of spontaneous inspiration . . .
